honest take: the student side is easy to attract — students with no internship will sign up for anything that promises proof of work. the brutal side is early-stage founders. they dont want to manage students. managing a junior is *more* work than doing the thing yourself, especially at day 1 when you have 40 other fires. the ones who will bite are founders 6-12 months in, already shipped an MVP, and specifically bottlenecked on a well-scoped task (like "build me a stripe integration" or "turn this figma into react"). not exploratory ML research. also the equity thing tbh mostly doesnt work at this stage. a student doing 10hrs/wk for 0.1% equity gets resentful fast when they realize the math. small cash (even $200 for a shipped task) + github commit in their name converts way better as a signal they can show future employers. our tiny advice from our own side project (price tracking at couponpicked) when we tried hiring students early: scope the work brutally small, pay a little, give them the commit. they got jobs, we got features, everyone won.

I'll give you honest constructive critical feedback. I've been in this exact situation. I'm the solo founder. I have 20+ years software exp. I tried to hire a student intern developer. He worked for me for 3 months over the summer. I'm going to tell you this isn't going to work, \*especially\* now in AI age. it takes just way too much time and effort to train/guide the student dev. A student dev needs guidance to know what to work on. The time I spend to guide him I could just prompt Cursor/Claude Code to do the project I want him to work on, and be faster. Not to mention, he's going to do the same thing anyway, but worse (because his prompting skills is not as good as mine, because I understand software architecture better and know how to design a system better). I did this last summer and that was when AI coding wasn't even that good. No Opus 4.5. just Gemini 2.5 pro and Sonnet 3.x. It was already borderline not worth the ROI on time investment. I did manage to find some projects that I couldn't just prompt and one-shot, and he did build a few useful things for me over the 3 months, overall I \*think\* was at least not net negative in my time investment to what I got back in result. But there's zero chance I would do something like that again now with Opus 4.5 being the baseline (nowadays Cursor with Sonnet 4.6 is even already as good). literally just today I one-shot a feature, a similar one to a project that I had my intern do last year, a feature that I could not just one-shot with the model capability last year. Cursor wrote it for me in 5\~10 minutes and there was no errors. I did some tweaks after that and shipped it. Literally less than 30 minutes of work, and most of it (\~15 mins) was writing the initial prompt (pretty extensive prompt that I spec'd out the feature in detail and some architecture points). Sorry, I know it sucks being in the position of a student developer looking for their first job/internship. But this idea is not it. Solo founders is the LEAST likely to hire a student dev now because of AI and because of how lack of time there is, and lack of runway there is. A big tech co is the type of place that can still afford to spend the time and money to train up a junior.

I'm finishing up a 6 hr internship now thats turning into a full time position, actually just helped draft my job description today. When internship hunting, one thing I did was really hone in on what I wanted, + cold email them expressing interest. For me this was local, good ethos, ideally positive impact either people or ecologically; then I found local non profits that fit what I would be happy to plug in with - pitched my overall skillset and possible areas it would meet their needs or pain points. For an internship, paid would be great but I was also open to unpaid just to network and get it done. Cold emailing local companies and non profits that fit my niche/passions not sending a cover, not a resume (save for later when interviewing or when requested) - just kind of pitching my personal skills and interest to intern with them got me multiple replies. At that point pretty much 1 zoom meeting secured the fit, then it was just paperwork. Tbh though interning for free turning into a ftj im super excited as the strategy is ultimately paying off in this case. Make sure to research possible gaps they have in your area, for me it was technical so pitching areas I could improve technical inefficiency. being free also was a bit more casual, hybrid/remote so I think it's important to find a good culture and expectations fit. Many companies try to exploit "free" interns, make sure you know who you're signing on to collab with for this project (your internship i mean).
