I'm in a position where its class by class. I have students who shut down, refuse any form of resistance, etc. if I can reach most of the class and hold them to my standards, I do that. A student failing to meet my standards is still an improvement over a student meeting the standards they are setting for themselves (in my case, young learners who aren't equipped to decide for themselves what they can or should be achieving). But, sometimes I have a critical mass of weak-willed gen-a babies and it requires a different approach. No matter what standard I set, the median defines who is successful and who isn't: I'm an arbiter over a failed class. There might be 1-2 who can do it my way at a high level? But so what? They are usually the type of kids who don't need me (me specifically, like, they would be fine with any ol teacher) I'm in a unique position: I have a lot of power to set the standard, but not a lot of power to enforce it. If parents don't buy in on what I want to do, it's moot. they rise to the occasion or I find a different approach for that group of kids. I worry by the time they're 20, you aren't unclogging that toilet overnight. Sorry for the poop analogy but I think it's relevant: I had a case of medical constipation in my 20s. Looked up how long I should wait before seeing a doctor, and when I crossed that line, I made an appointment and got some medications to help speed things along. The doctor told me, however long it takes for things to improve: that's how long I should expect for things to be solved. If they've been intellectually and emotionally constipated for 10 years, it is a 10 year journey of rehab. The entirity of that journey isn't your problem
