If negotiating with you - or intimidating you, within the bounds of professional conduct - makes you withdraw the application, then they will do that, not because it's fair but because it helps their client. You do not need to engage with your mother's lawyer. There can be good reasons to negotiate with the other side('s lawyers) directly, but it's not automatically a good idea and it's not always worthwhile. Equally, the assertion that they expect to win is just that: they expect to win, but they haven't actually won yet. What _does_ matter is that your mother now has a professional, with professional experience, helping her navigate the process. You do not. While you're not at a legal disadvantage because of that, you are at a practical one. If you can swing it, I'd consult with a lawyer immediately, at least for some limited scope advice on what, if any, response is useful for you in your position.
