Its up to the landlord if they refund you the overpaid rent which I highly doubt they will and just apply it towards next month rent etc. You need to read your lease about subletting etc and go from there. >2. LEASE REMOVAL >I have vacated the apartment, but need to be removed from the lease before it expires mid-July. The leasing office requires my roommate's signature, which she is refusing to provide. You are on the hook on the lease until your room mate signs off. Since they refused you are screwed here. Don't room mate with someone in an apartment for someone you don't know as this is what happens. You can only remove yourself off the lease when that lease expires by putting in that vacate notice. >3. DEFAMATION >My roommate made false statements about me to our mutual friend group, causing significant reputational and emotional harm. I have since been diagnosed with depression as a result. I lack documented proof, but would like to understand my options. Very difficult to prove on defamation as it has to cause damage to you instead of just depression. For example If someone called your work and made a defamation claim stating you were a sexual predator even though you are not you have a claim as you will probably lose job and wages etc. For being diagnosised with depression you can maybe get some damages for the treatment of the room mate spreading rumors stating you are a bad person etc. I do not see how an attorney will take that case without a retainer fee. You need to move on and continue therapy for this.
